In the absence of world number one Ashleigh Barty , Aryna Sabalenka will probably be the favorite in Guadalajara. Even though the current second in the ATP charts is still waiting for its first success in a Grand Slam tournament. However: At the WTA Finals 2021 there is only one woman who has actually won one of the four majors in the current season: Barbora Krejcikova in Paris. In addition to Barty, winner of Wimbledon, Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka and the surprise winner of the US Open Emma Raducanu are also missing in Mexico.

Sabalenka, like the other seven fixed starters, has been in the high altitude of Guadalajara for a few days, and since Tuesday she has also known her group opponents: It is against Maria Sakkari , Iga Swiatek and Paula Badosa. All debutantes on this stage. Krejcikova plays in Group B against Garbine Muguruza ,Karolina Pliskova and Anett Kontaveit. After all, Muguruza and Pliskova can already look back on experiences at the end of the season. Kontaveit, on the other hand, got her ticket to the finals at the latest possible time with her tournament victories in Moscow and Cluj-Napoca.

According to the head-to-head results, Karolina Pliskova could at least have the edge in her group: The Czech leads against compatriot Krejcikova with 2-0 wins, against Muguruza even 8-2, and against Kontaveit with 3-0.

In group A there are almost no comparisons. Only the game Aryna Sabalenka against Maria Sakkari has been played five times so far, with four wins for Sabalenka.
