Here and there Petra Kvitova lets the old class shine again. If need be, even under conditions that don't particularly suit their game. Because Kvitova likes it rather fast. And Indian Wells is playing extra slow this year. If hard court specialist Daniil Medvedev is to be believed.
In any case, Kvitova saved four match points against Jessica Pegula and won 6: 2, 3: 6 and 7: 6 (11). The next opponent for the two-time Wimbledon champion will be Maria Sakkari. Last year's Greek finalist from Indian Wells won against Karolina Pliskova 6:4, 5:7 and 6:3.
Cirstea beats Garcia
Sorana Cirstea, on the other hand, caused what was probably the biggest surprise of the packed round of 16 day. The Romanian, who was and is so often plagued by injuries, won against Caroline Garcia 6-4, 4-6 and 7-5. Cirstea now plays against either Iga Swiatek or Emma Raducanu.
The reigning Wimbledon champion had no problems: Elena Rybakina, who was a finalist at the Australian Open at the beginning of the year, won 6: 3 and 6: 0 against Varvara Gracheva. Next opponent for Rybakina is Karolina Muchova in the quarterfinals.
