It wasn't even close: neither Arnya Sabalenka nor Elena Rybakina stayed long with their opponents in Indian Wells on Friday. Sabalenka safely defeated Maria Sakkari 6:2 and 6:3. More surprising, especially in terms of clarity, was Rybakina's 6:2 and 6:2 against Iga Swiatek. Even if the Kazakh in Melbourne against Swiatek was also successful in two sets.
It also remains the case that defending the women's title in Indian Wells is almost an impossibility. Martina Navratilova was last able to do this in 1991. Incidentally, Swiatek and Sakkari had contested the final almost twelve months ago.
After the experiences of the Australian Open, tennis fans can look forward to a high-class meeting between Rybakina and Sabalenka. At the first major of the year, the Belarusian was able to assert herself after three sets and won her first major title. Elena Rybakina, on the other hand, is the reigning Wimbledon champion.
