Surprise at the WTA 1000 tournament in Indian Wells: Aryna Sabalenka , third in the world rankings, had to admit defeat to Jasmine Paolini 6: 2, 3: 6 and 3: 6. "I'm so happy. I didn't expect this moment. I'm just happy to be here in the third round," said the Italian after the match. She now meets Viktorija Golubic.
Otherwise, the favorites mostly prevailed at the beginning of the day: Anett Kontaveit (6: 4 and 6: 1 against Kristina Kucova) and Maria Sakkari (6: 3 and 7: 5 against Katerina Siniakova) won, as did Elise Mertens (6: 2 and 6:1 against Marta Kostyuk) and Elena Rybakina (6:1 and 7:5 against Alison Van Uytvanck).
Petra Kvitova, on the other hand, had to fight a little harder, beating Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6:7 (4), 6:4 and 6:4. She followed her compatriot Marketa Vondrousova, who had the upper hand against Magdalena Frech 6:1 and 6:3, into the third round.
