After her two convincing appearances at the beginning of the tournament and the surprising exit of the top seeded Karolina Pliskova , Iga Swiatek was the big favorite for the title before the start of the round of 16 at the WTA 1000 tournament in Indian Wells. However, another player has to take on this role, as the Pole was eliminated in two sets on Tuesday.

Jelena Ostapenko turned out to be far too strong for the fourth in the world rankings in stage 3 and clearly won 6: 4 and 6: 3. Swiatek also had to struggle with physical complaints, in the second set the 20-year-old even had to leave the pitch due to stomach problems.

Ostapenko will now face Shelby Rogers in the quarter-finals. The American also managed a surprise against US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez and prevailed in a gripping duel after a set deficit with 2: 6, 6: 1 and 7: 6 (4).

Previously, the spectators in Stadium 1 had seen Elina Svitolina, who was seeded in fourth place, go off. The Ukrainian, who struggled with problems on her right leg, was clearly defeated by Jessica Pegula 1: 6 and 1: 6. The American takes on Victoria Azarenka or Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the last eight.
