Gauff made the decisive break to 3-2 in the second set. In the end, Petkovic had three chances to break 5: 5, but Gauff finally served.

The only 15-year-old Gauff, who had sensationally reached the round of 16 in Wimbledon, was actually eliminated in the qualification against Tamara Korpatsch from Hamburg, but then, as a lucky loser, moved into the main field. In the round of 16 Petkovic had thrown Julia Görges (Bad Oldesloe), who was number five, out of the tournament in the German duel.

For Gauff it is the first final on the WTA tour. She now meets the winner of the match between Ekaterina Alexandrova and Jelena Ostapenko.
