It didn't go badly for Cori Gauff in this young tennis season in 2021. In Adealaide, the 17-year-old had reached the semi-finals from qualifying (where she lost to Belinda Bencic ), a few days later in Dubai at least the round of eight (Loss against Jil Teichmann). Gauff certainly had big plans for the home tournament in Miami. And was given a difficult task by the draw. In the end she clearly failed, as at the US Open 2020. Gauff was defeated by Anastasija Sevastova 6: 1, 2: 6 and 3: 6. In New York City last year, the Latvian also prevailed in three rounds.

Thursday brought some remarkable results for women anyway: World number one Ashleigh Barty almost flew out of the competition against Kristina Kucova, but was still able to turn a break deficit in the third set. Aryna Sabalenka had to go into the tie-break of round three against Tsvetana Pironkova, which the Belarusian won 11: 9.

And Simona Hale p probably also wished for an easier debut in the traditional tournament in Florida. The Romanian had to fight hard with Caroline Garcia, especially at the beginning, and finally prevailed 3: 6, 6: 4 and 6: 0. For Halep it was the 400th match win in a WTA main field.

On the other hand, Angelique Kerber , who did not play a single game against Renata Zarazua, and French Open winner Iga Swiatek , who won against Barbora Krejcikova 6: 4 and 6: 2, were sovereign.
