Apart from reaching the final at the WTA 250 event in Lyon - where Caroline Garcia suffered a surprising two-set defeat by the American Alycia Parks - the 2023 season sometimes had little that could really be counted for the Frenchwoman who was so strong the previous year. Now the fifth in the world rankings has at least reached their second final of the season: At the WTA 250 event in Monterrey, Garcia played his way into the final with an ultimately safe two-set win over Elise Mertens.

In this, the French now meets the Croatian world number 31. Donna Vekic. Vekic, who was seeded third, also showed a very confident performance in the semifinals and played her way into her first final of the season with a 7:5 and 6:2 against Lin Zhu. So far, the quarter-finals at the Australian Open - where Vekic was eventually to fail due to eventual winner Aryna Sabalenka - was the best performance of the 2023 season.

At the WTA 250 event in Austin, which is taking place at the same time, there will be a new premiere winner on the WTA tour: Vavara Gracheva and Marta Kostyuk surprisingly reached the final there. The former defeated the American Katie Volynets in three sets in the semi-finals, while Kostyuk surprisingly put Danielle Collins in her place in two sets.
