Nobody wants to kill Bambi - except maybe a few contemporaries driven by pure sadism. We don't want to count Aryna Sabalenka to this group of people without looking. In top sport, however, there is simply no room for too pronounced good-naturedness - and so the Belarusian was of course happy about her clear 6: 3, 6: 1 knockout round triumph against local hero Rebecca Marino at the highly endowed WTA 1000 event in Montreal, Canada.
With her joy, however, the 23-year-old was alone at the Center Court in Montreal. Understandable because the Canadian had actually ended her career eight years ago, but for three years now, Marino has been professionally picking up the bat again. Initially with manageable success. Only this year, the former number 38 in the world is internationally more successful again, an ITF Tour title went to Marino's account in 2021.
In the first round, Marino sensationally knocked out Madison Keys and then defeated Paula Badosa. In a hard-fought match, the Canadian finally won 1: 6, 7: 5 and 6: 4.
