Games between compatriots always exude a certain charm, especially when they are played on a big stage. This is what happened on the quarter-finals day of the WTA 1000 event in Montreal. In the first match of the day, tournament number one Aryna Sabalenka and two-time Australian Open winner Viktoria Azarenka clashed. And whoever expected a tense game to the end with such a high cast… was disappointed. The current number 3 in the WTA ranking made short work of the 32-year-old tennis mom from Minsk with a clear 6: 2, -6: 4 success.
Sabalenka increased it to 3: 1 in direct duels against the former world number one. She will now face the Czech Karolina Pliskova in the semifinals of the highly endowed hard court tournament in North America. The current sixth in the world rankings practically just as confidently dealt with her quarter-final opponent Sara Sorribes Tormo from Spain 6: 4, 6: 0. The following duel between Sabalenka and Pliskova is a new edition of the Wimbledon semi-finals this year. There the 29-year-old North Bohemian prevailed in three sets. In the head-to-head, however, the Belarusian leads 2: 1.
