Angelique Kerber actually wanted to take her very good shape across the Atlantic from California to Moscow, where the Bremen woman had promised to start at the WTA 500 event. A top-ranked tournament in the Russian capital, in which Aryna Sabalenka, Garbine Muguruza and Maria Sakkari, among others, start the race.

Angelique Keber's appearance did not work out for a short time, the German had to announce her cancellation due to illness on the first day of the tournament. Most recently, Kerber failed in the quarterfinals in Indian Wells in two contested sets against the eventual winner Paula Badosa. The 33-year-old is currently in twelfth place in the WTA world rankings.

Dayana Yastremska and Daria Kasatkina had a pitch-black day on Monday. The first failed to kick off with number 101 in the women's tennis world, losing to Anna Kalinskaya 6: 7 (5) and 4: 6. For local hero Kasatkina, it was a clear two-set defeat against Anhelina Kalinina, who is currently ranked 382 in the WTA charts.
