Aryna Sabalenka, second in the world rankings, will start the race at the top of the list in Moscow. The Belarusian had to pass the WTA 1000 event in Indian Wells due to a COVID infection, now the 23-year-old is back on the hunt for number one. At the start in Moscow, Sabalenka benefits from a bye, in the second round the Belarusian waits for the winner of the duel between Liudmilla Samsonova and Alja Tomljanovic.

In the quarter-finals, Sabalenka could meet Ons Jabeur, who will start the race as number five. In Indian Wells, Jabeur made her way to the top ten in the women's tennis world for the first time, and in round one the Tunisian will face Ekaterina Alexandrova. Also on the upper half of the draw are Maria Sakkari - equipped with a bye in round one - and Simona Halep, who slipped into the tournament with a wildcard and meets Anastasia Potapova.
