Right at the start of the day, the first surprise came at the WTA 500 event. The number four on the seeding list, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, had to watch without a chance in the first match as Marketa Vondrousova won her semifinal ticket 6: 4 and 6: 2. The Czech is now waiting for the winner of the duel between Garbine Muguruza and Anett Kontaveit.
The tournament's number one, second in the world ranking list Aryna Sabalenka, has already failed. After a COVID infection, which prevented the Belarusian from competing in Indian Wells, the 23-year-old suffered a bitter quarter-final defeat in Moscow. In the round of the last eight, Sabalenka lost to Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova in two sets.
