The WTA 1000 tournament in Indian Wells has apparently left its mark: The two semi-finalists Ons Jabeur and Jelena Ostapenko were both unable to finish their first round games in Moscow. One beneficiary of this was the German Andrea Petkovic, who won eight games in a row against Ostapenko after losing the starting set and ultimately benefited from a task by the former French Open winner with a score of 2: 6, 6: 0 and 2: 0. Petkovic now meets Anett Kotaveit, who in turn prevailed 6: 3 and 6: 3 against Katerina Siniakova.

Jabeur stayed on the court even shorter than Ostapenko. The Tunisian gave against Ekaterina Alexandrova with a score of 6: 1 and 1: 0 for the Russian where the 27-year-old Jabeur suffered a severe setback in the fight for the WTA Finals. After this week she will still be behind the eighth placed Paula Badosa. In the final act for the last starting place in the coming week, both will contest a WTA 250 tournament: Badosa will start in Cluj, Jabuer in Courmayeur.

Former world number one Simona Halep has no chance of participating in Guadalajara. The Romanian was able to look forward to an opening win in Moscow, beating Anastasia Potapova 6: 1 and 6: 4.
