Belinda Bencic picks up speed in Ostrava

For Belinda Bencic, things are looking up again after the surprisingly clear defeat at the WTA event in Luxembourg. The Swiss, who was crowned Olympic champion this year, clearly defeated the Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo in two sets in the second round of the WTA 500 event in Ostrava. The Swiss will now face Anett Kontaveit in the quarter-finals, who defeated Paula Badosa in two sets on Wednesday.

The Greek Maria Sakkari also made it into the round of the last eight on Thursday. The 26-year-old defeated the Latvian Jelena Ostapenko in the afternoon. Elena Rybakina also made it to the quarter-finals as expected, although the Kazakh had to go the full distance against Magda Linette. Rybakina meets Iga Swiatek in the quarter-finals, Sakkari surprisingly faces the wildcard Tereza Martincova.

The Czech had knocked number five of the tournament, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, out of the tournament in the early evening. Although Martincova showed nerves in the second set, left several chances to end the match on her own serve - but in the end the local hero won two tiebreaks.
