Kontaveit (WTA No. 22) beat the top seed Petra Martic 6: 2 and 6: 4. Ferro (WTA No. 53) then took out local hero Camila Giorgi with 2: 6, 6: 2 and 7: 5.

Both are playing for their second trophy on the WTA Tour: Kontaveit celebrated her debut title in 's-Hertogenbosch in 2017, while Ferro won her first and only tournament victory in Lausanne last year.

Kontaveit had taken Laura Siegemund, the only German starter, out of the tournament in round 2 in Palermo.

Palermo final on Sunday evening

Ferro will crack the top 50 in the world for the first time, regardless of the outcome of the final. 52nd place was the 23-year-old's best performance so far. Kontaveit, meanwhile, will crack the top 20 again, she was already in 14th place in the WTA rankings.

The final is scheduled for 7.30 p.m. (live on DAZN), before Elisabetta Cocciaretto / Martina Trevisian and Arantxa Rus / Tamara Zidansek play the double final.

That with 163,103 euros is the first WTA tournament since the Corona shutdown, two events in Prague and Lexington will follow in the coming week.

For the men, the ATP tour doesn't start again until August 23, at the Western and Southern Open, which actually take place in Cincinnati, but this year will be held on the grounds of the US Open in Flushing Meadows / New York. The previously planned tournament in Washington has been canceled.
