WTA Parma: Mayar Sherif makes history with tournament victory

Mayar Sherif clinched her first tournament victory on the WTA Tour at the WTA 250 event in Parma and thus wrote tennis history for Egypt. In the final, the Egyptian beat top seed Maria Sakkari in straight sets.

What a day for Mayar Sherif! The world rankings-74. from Egypt secured her first tournament victory at the WTA 250 clay court event in Parma, becoming the first player from her country to win a title on the WTA Tour. In the final, the 26-year-old defeated the top seeded Greek Maria Sakkari 7:5 and 6:3.

For Sherif, her double shift ended on Saturday - before that she had only beaten Ana Bogdan in the semifinals after almost three hours of play - thus also with the first top ten win of her career. "I'm exhausted. Today was a very hard day for me, many hours on the pitch. I'm very happy that I made it. I had to work very hard," said Sherif after the final.

At the WTA 250 tournament in Tallinn, the final will not take place until Sunday. This is contested by Anett Kontaveit and Barbora Krejcikova. While the top seeded Estonian hardly had any problems with her compatriot Kaia Kanpei in the 6: 4 and 6: 4 success, the Czech needed more than three hours against Belinda Bencic to 6: 7 (5), 7: 6 (2) and To bring a 6:2 victory under one roof.
