Women's team manager Rainer Schüttler is hoping for a speedy trend reversal

Team boss Rainer Schüttler hopes that the crisis in German women's tennis will end soon. "The expectation in Germany should be that in the next year or two two German players will be in the top 20," said the former professional before the duel with Brazil in the Billie Jean King Cup on Friday and Saturday in Stuttgart in an interview with the Stuttgart news/newspaper.

Schüttler emphasized that among the "younger players" Jule Niemeier had already proven "what she's capable of" with her participation in the quarter-finals in Wimbledon last year. Apart from her current problems, the Dortmund woman "brings everything". In addition, Noma Noha Akugue, Eva Lys and Nastastja Schunk are "very promising talents, one or the other of whom can certainly shoot through".

Before the top-class WTA tournament, which also begins in Stuttgart on Sunday, there is no German in the top 50 in the world rankings. According to Schüttler, this is "above all a social issue". In many Eastern European countries, 14-year-olds were already leading the life of a professional. On the other hand, "more value is placed on school and training in this country".
