The first round between Garbiñe Muguruza and Coco Gauff developed into an open exchange of blows, so the decision had to be made in the tie-break. In this, the Spaniard played her routine against the 16-year-old Gauff and decided the short decision 7: 3 for herself. However, this was no reason for Cori Gauff to give up the match prematurely. The American managed to equalize the set 6: 3.

But then it was again Garbiñe Muguruza who was able to put her stamp on the game and win set three and thus the match with 7: 6 (3), 3: 6 and 6: 3. The Spaniard will now meet the winner of the match between Irina-Camelia Begu and Johanna Konta, who are due to meet in the late afternoon.

Vondrousova and Kuznetsova continue

Meanwhile, Elina Svitolina's next opponent is already certain. The lady from Ukraine will face Svetlana Kuznetsova in the round of 16. The Russian prevailed in a high-class match against the Estonian Anett Kontaveit. Marketa Vondrousova, French Open finalist from last year, also secured a place in the last 16. The Czech defeated Aranxta Rus 6: 3 and 6: 3.

There was a medium-sized surprise in the match between Petra Martic and Julija Putintseva. The Kazakh gave the number eight of the tournament a tough fight and finally got the upper hand 6: 3, 6: 7 (2) and 6: 4.
