After winning the first set, Halep seemed to have everything under control and also presented a break in the second round. Kerber, however, fought his way back, managed to equalize to 3: 3. And Halep apparently injured his calf with a small movement. The medical timeout, which the Romanian took with the sympathy of Kerber, did not lead to the desired result. Halep had to break off the game and hobbled out of the grandstand together with her opponent.

Angelique Kerber is in the round of 16, where she meets the 2017 French Open winner, Jelena Ostapenko. After Serena Williams lost against Nadia Podoroska, Petra Kvitova against Vera Zvonareva and Naomi Osaka against Jessica Pegula (and Australian open finalist Jennifer Brady couldn't compete), Karolina Pliskova is the only remaining seed in the lower half of the tableau.

Above, however, are Ashleigh Barty and Aryna Sabalenka, the two best players of the last few weeks, plus Elina Svitolina, a woman who has already won in Rome. Then there are Iga Swiatek, who won Roland Garros in autumn 2020, and Garbine Muguruza on her comeback.
