The German tennis player Julia Görges (Bad Oldesloe) was eliminated in the first round of the WTA tournament in Rome. In the first game after her ankle injury, the 31-year-old Danka Kovinic (Montenegro) lost 1: 6, 0: 6.
In July Görges played her first game after the forced Corona break at the Berlin invitation tournament, but had to give up in the quarter-finals against Latvian Anastasija Sevastova due to an ankle injury.
Vekic and Riske lose
Sevastova also suffered a first round defeat in Rome. The Latvian was clearly defeated by wildcard owner Jasmine Paolini with 2: 6 and 3: 6 and thus missed a second round encounter with Simona Halep, who was in first position.
Paolini's compatriot Camilia Giorgi, however, lost in the first round: The Italian lost to Dayana Yastremska with 5: 7, 7: 6 (5) and 4: 6. The Ukrainian, who recently broke up with trainer Sascha Bajin , will now meet Amanda Anisimova, who asserted herself against the seeded Donna Vekic in two tiebreaker sets.
Alison Riske (7: 5, 6: 7 (4) and 3: 6 against Aliona Bolsova) also lost another seeded player. Elise Mertens, who was in eleventh place, won 6: 3 and 6: 1 against Su-Wei Hsieh.
