Iga Swiatek only had to play briefly on the first lap

For about half an hour, Petra Kvitova thought she was in the wrong film in Rome: The Czech, who was in eleventh place, lost the first round of her opening game against Magda Linette with 1: 6 and made mistakes on the assembly line. After that, however, the 31-year-old was able to stabilize her game and still achieve the 1: 6, 6: 0 and 6: 2 successes.

The reigning French Open winner Iga Swiatek also had big problems in her encounter against Alison Riske at the beginning and was quickly confronted with a 1: 4 deficit. The Polish woman was able to make up for both breaks and then benefited from an injury-related task (left foot) by the American with a score of 5: 4 and 40:40.

Risky compatriot Jennifer Brady, however, fared much better. The Australian Open finalist, who was in 13th position, beat Shuai Zhang 6: 1 and 6: 4.

In addition, two other Americans made it into the second round. Jessica Pegula defeated Daria Kastakina 7: 5 and 6: 3, youngster Cori Gauff had to fight much harder: The 16-year-old needed almost three hours to get Yulia Putintseva 7: 5, 4: 6 and 6: 4 out of the Take tournament.
