Admittedly, the draw for Serena Williams could have been a little easier: Nadia Podoroska reached the semi-finals at the French Open last year, so she knows how to go about it. Which of course also applies to Serena, who has prepared in the academy of her coach Patrick Mouratoglou for the start of her short Aschenplatz season. Nevertheless, the US icon was not granted a sense of achievement in her 1000th individual match on the WTA tour: Williams was defeated by Podoroska 6: 7 (6) and 5: 7.
After the lost tiebreak, it quickly looked bad for the 23-time Grand Slam winner in round two. Podoroska led 5: 2, but Williams made the comeback to 5: 5. But then the 39-year-old made too many mistakes on her own serve and had to congratulate her opponent on reaching the last sixteen.
