One man's meat is another man's suffering. Or: what the fans at the WTA 500 event in San Diego are happy for, local hero Amanda Anisimova suffers from. As of now, this will be the first replacement for the women's tournament in California. As number 22 in the world, mind you.

Because: In San Diego, almost all of the world's top women will do the honors. The field is led by world number one Iga Swiatek, followed by Anett Kontaveit, Paula Badosa and Sofia Kenin (number four by Protected Ranking). In total, six of the currently best ten women in the world are at the start in San Diego.

Since San Diego also works with four wildcards, four byes and six qualifiers, only 18 women have a fixed place in the main draw according to the world rankings. And here falls the world number 22. Amanda Anisimova just not in.

The San Diego WTA 500 event will take place from October 10th to 16th. 16 of the top 20 players in the world will compete in California.
