Coco Gauff defeated Naomi Osaka in straight sets in San Jose

The only 18-year-old Coco Gauff won the highly explosive round of 16 duel at the WTA Tour 500 hard court tournament in San Jose against the former world number one from Japan Naomi Osaka in two sets. The current number eleven in the WTA rankings won 6: 4, 6: 4 and meets the Spaniard Paula Badosa in the quarterfinals, who had a hard fight over sets against the qualifier Elizabeth Mandlik on Wednesday.

Osaka fended off three break and thus match balls at 1: 5 and 3: 5 of the second set with their own service (there were a total of seven match balls fended off by the lady from Osaka), but that didn't change anything at the end of the game. Gauff admitted the obvious nervousness after the game: "At 5: 1, 40: 0 I was anything but calm. It's very rare for someone to come back twice from a 0:40, but it's Naomi. That's just something for a fighter she is. She could have just given up, but she didn't."

Raducanu in Washington in the quarterfinals

The top seeded Greek Maria Sakkari clearly failed in California, who had nothing to order in the 1: 6, 3: 6 against the local hero Shelby Rogers. Aryana Sabalenka (5:7, 6:1, 7:5 against Caroline Dolehide from the USA) and Veronika Kudermetova (6:2, 7:5 against Claire Liu) complete the quarter-final tableau at the event, which is worth around 760,000 US dollars.

At the WTA Tour 250 tournament in Washington, which is held together with the ATP World Tour 500 tournament as a combined event, the British Emma Raducanu has so far shown her good side. Last year's US Open winner is in the quarter-finals after a 2:50-hour 7: 6 (5), 7: 6 (4) against Colombian Camila Osorio. The second seed meets the Russian Liudmila Samsonova there.
