The 34-year-old former world number nine defeated Swede Rebecca Peterson 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 on Tuesday. Petkovic now meets the former French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko from Latvia or the Chinese Wang Xinyu.
For Jule Niemeier, however, the two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova from the Czech Republic proved to be one size too big in the first round. The 22-year-old from Dortmund, who fought her way into the main draw via qualification, lost 6-2, 6-1.
In her victory, Kvitova managed the feat of winning a service game with four aces in a row.
Niemeier, who was recently nominated for the Billie Jean King Cup, found no recipe against Kvitova and is still waiting for success at tour level this year.
