Kontaveit was already behind with set and break in the second round, but fought his way back into the match. In the third set she was already 2:5 behind, but after three hours of play she was crowned the winner.

The Estonian remains virtually unbeatable as soon as a hall roof watches over her: she has now been unbeaten in the hall for 20 matches. In St. Petersburg she celebrated her sixth tournament victory ever, the fifth within the last six months.

Kontaveit from Monday on world number 6

Kontaveit won the WTA tournament in Cleveland at the end of August and has probably been playing the best tennis of her career ever since. At the end of last season she had broken the top 10 in the world for the first time, with the victory in St. Petersburg she will now climb to sixth place, a new career high.

She is now leading 7:6 in a direct comparison with Sakkari, and today is February 13th, she was told afterwards... Kontaveit let these statistics of a somewhat different kind stand. "I had no idea about that."
