"From Cologne residents for Cologne" was the motto under which Oliver Müller and his team set out to establish a WTA Tour tournament in the cathedral city. The premiere should have been in 2021, but it had to be canceled due to the corona pandemic. But last year was probably the only chance - because the "Cologne Open" will definitely not take place in 2022.

"Today I have to inform you with great regret that the WTA license has been sold and the WTA has also approved the sale," said tournament director Müller in a broadcast. "Due to sudden and persistent health problems on the part of one of the shareholders, there was instability that could not be offset due to the corona pandemic."

It is difficult to say whether there will be another opportunity to acquire a license. However, Cologne as a location for professional tennis was recommended in autumn 2020: two ATP Tour 250 tournaments were held in the Lanxess Arena in a row. If without spectators, then with a prominent series winner: Alexander Zverev won both events individually.
