Coco Gauff has safely reached the second round in Toronto

Coco Gauff is still in good shape: The American made a strong start to the WTA 1000 event in Toronto and thus fixed the eagerly awaited second round duel with the newly crowned Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina. With 6: 1 and 6: 3, Gauff dealt with compatriot Madison Brengle on Tuesday evening (CET).

In the event of a win over Rybakina, who is unseeded despite winning Wimbledon (which didn't come without a 2,000 point reward) in Toronto, the American could face Aryna Sabalenka. The sixth-seeded Belarusian meets Sara Sorribes Tormo in the round of 32 after beating Claire Liu 3-31.

Giorgi strong nerves

Emma Raducanu has already been eliminated in Toronto: The reigning US Open winner lost to Camila Giorgi, who won the National Bank Open in Montreal last year and is therefore the defending champion in Toronto. Giogi showed better nerves in a hard-fought opening set and won it 7:6 (0) in the tie-break.

In the second round, Raducanu got off to a good start, but then the 19-year-old completely broke. With six wins in a row, Giorgi finally won the second round ticket with 7: 6 (0) and 6: 2. In this, the Italian now meets Elise Mertens.
