WTA Toronto: Iga Swiatek threatens second round duel with Shelby Rogers, Serena Williams opens against qualifier

Incredibly strong field of participants at the WTA 1000 event in Toronto: 16 of the first 17 in the women's tennis world are at the hard court classic. The field is thus led by the number one in the world, Iga Swiatek. The Pole meets the winner of the duel between Shelby Rogers and Veronika Kudermetova after a bye.

In round three, Swiatek could meet Leylah Fernandez, possible opponents in the quarter-finals are Belinda Bencic and Garbine Muguruza according to the seed list. Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams are also lurking in this section of the draw - Osaka will face Kaia Kanepi at the start and could then meet Muguruza, Williams is initially waiting for a qualifier and is a possible second-round opponent of Belinda Bencic.

Kontaveit with a possible duel with Venus Williams

In the second quarter of the draw, Maria Sakkari and Ons Jabeur have the best chances of moving into the quarter-finals according to the seed list. The Greek meets the winner of the duel between Sofia Kenin and Sloane Stephens after a bye, while Jabeur faces Qinwen Zheng or Rebecca Marino.

According to the world rankings, Jessica Pegula and Paula Badosa as well as Anett Kontaveit and Aryna Sabalenka could contest the quarterfinals in the lower half of the draw. Also on the lower half of the tableau: Coco Gauff, who initially meets a qualifier, and Venus Williams, who has to deal with Jil Teichmann at the start. The winner is the first opponent of Anett Kontaveit, the number two of the tournament.
