WTA Toronto: Simona Halep wrestles Jessica Pegula down

Simona Halep is in the final of the Toronto WTA 1000 event. The Romanian defeated the world number seven Jessica Pegula after a big fight with 2: 6, 6: 3 and 6: 4.

Simona Halep 's strong run in Toronto continues: The Romanian, who knocked out youngster Coco Gauff in the quarter-finals, defeated the next American Jessica Pegula, number seven in the tournament, in the semi-finals 2-6, 6-3 and 6 :4. The former world number one is fighting for the title at the WTA 1000 event on Sunday.

After two semi-finals in three tournaments, Simona Halep has now reached the final for the first time. In the final, the Romanian meets the winner of the duel between Beatriz Haddad Maia and Karolina Pliskova. The Brazilian eliminated Iga Swiatek, among others, during the course of the tournament.

The Romanian Halep, trained by Patrick Mouratoglou for a few weeks, will be among the top ten in the WTA world rankings again from Monday. The former world number one could still achieve a top position at the US Open with a good performance in Cincinnati.
