Outsider Beatriz Haddad Maia continued her triumphal march at the WTA tournament in Toronto. After her success against world number one Iga Swiatek, the Brazilian also prevailed against Olympic tennis champion Belinda Bencic. After her 2: 6, 6: 3, 6: 3 against the Swiss, Haddad Maia is in a WTA 1000 semi-final for the first time and meets the Czech Karolina Pliskova.

"I didn't get into the game the way I wanted," said the 26-year-old South American, "but I stayed positive. A tennis match like that changes quickly." Haddad Maia continues her rise in the world rankings. By reaching the semi-finals, she will definitely be in the top 20 for the first time from Monday. If she even celebrates her third tournament win of the year on the WTA Tour to Nottingham and Birmingham in June, she would move from 20th to 14th place climb.

The second semi-final at Toonto's WTA 1000 event is contested by Simona Halep and Jessica Pegula. Halep defeated Coco Gauff in two sets in the first semi-final of the day on Friday, the American Pegula kept the upper hand against Yulia Putintseva 6: 3 and 6: 3. A win in Toronto would see Simona Halep move from 13th to sixth, past her semifinalist Jessica Pegula.
