Iga Swiatek missed the chance to win her fourth straight hard court title. In the round of 16 of the WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto, the world number one lost to the Brazilian left-hander Beatriz Haddad Maia after exactly three minutes of play 4: 6, 6: 3 and 5: 7.

In the third set, Swiatek initially caught up from a 2:4 deficit and fended off a match point with an ace when the score was 4:5, but Haddad Maia struck only a little later. In the quarterfinals, the 26-year-old will meet Garbine Muguruza or Belinda Bencic.

Pegula eliminates defending champion Giorgi

Jessica Pegula and Camila Giorgi also had a big fight. In the end, it was the American, who was seventh, who defeated the defending champion from Italy 3:6, 6:0 and 7:5. In the third set, Pegula even fended off a match point.

It wasn't that tight for Cori Gauff, but the 18-year-old also had to tremble against Aryna Sabalenka for a long time. Only after three hours and eleven minutes was she 7: 5, 4: 7 and 7: 6 (4) success. The 18-year-old now meets Simona Halep, who defeated Jil Teichmann 6-2 and 7-5.
