Guadalajara hosted the 2021 WTA Finals and organized the top eight tournament in less than two months when the WTA needed a replacement venue for the event previously held in Shenzhen. Although the move was initially prompted by coronavirus restrictions in China, it had received an extra boost by the time the tournament was staged.

The WTA has not held any events in China since November. All of this can be traced back to the Peng Shuai case . Before the WTA Finals, Guadalajara was a 250 event. The new 1000 tournament will be played on the same site and will have the same organizers. The Octagon agency is involved in organizing the event. However, the WTA Tour has not yet officially added the new hard court event to its calendar.
