Statistics guru Craig O'Shannessy has once again pursued an exciting question for the ATP: Which players manage to make up for arrears on their own serve most often? This goes with a very mundane 0:15 o'clock, but then increases to the threatening 0:40. The results from O'Shannessy show that Matteo Berrettini came back most often with the service.
After a 0:15, however, a long-established serving force has the nose in front: John Isner. If the American gave up the first point in a service game, he was still able to win almost 85 percent of the games.
Serve held after 0:15
John Isner | 84.3% (113/134) |
Matteo Berrettini | 80.4% (176/219) |
Novak Djokovic | 76.0% (171/225) |
Roger Federer | 76.0% (38/50) |
After 0: 30 deficits, industry leader Novak Djokovic has a delicate nose in front of Berrettini.
Serve held after 0:30
Novak Djokovic | 61.5% (48/78) |
Matteo Berrettini | 61.3% (38/62) |
Stefanos Tsitsipas | 59.1% (52/88) |
But the master class - fending off three breakballs in a row and then winning the game - is led by Matteo Berrettini. Small restriction: Even Berrettini was able to win "only" 38.1 percent of these games. Interesting, by the way, that John Isner only got this position eleven times during the entire tennis year.
Serve held after 0:40
Matteo Berrettini | 38.1% (8/21) |
John Isner | 36.4% (4/11) |
Grigor Dimitrov | 35.7% (5/14) |
The statistics after a 15:40 deficit on his own serve are also remarkable: Denis Shapovalov was the only player on the ATP tour who won more than half of these service games.
Serve held after 15:40
Denis Shapovalov | 51.4% (37/72) |
Alexei Popyrin | 46.7% (28/60) |
Matteo Berrettini | 46.3% (25/54) |
A 30:40 is then again more promising. Here, too, Berrettini has the edge.
Serve held after 30:40
Matteo Berrettini | 61.8% (63/102) |
Denis Shapovalov | 59.8% (76/127) |
Roger Federer | 58.8% (20/34) |
