Rafael Nadal has already hinted at it after his surprisingly competitive opening victory at the ATP 500 event in Washington: Physically in top shape, the Spaniard has by no means traveled to the USA, rather the early start in the capital was an initial assessment. This is now likely to have turned out much more negative than one might have expected in the Spaniard's camp.

Already at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Toronto, the Iberian had to withdraw a few hours before his first round match, now it has been announced that Nadal will also be the last tournament before the US Open - the Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati - due to an injury on his left Foot will miss. The 20-time Grand Slam champion will travel to the last Grand Slam of the year with just two games on the American continent.

For the first time since 2001 "Big Three" completely absent

The big title favorite Novak Djokovic will have similarly little match practice there. A few days before Nadal, the Serb announced that he would miss the two Masters events in North America in order to regenerate as best as possible before the US Open. In addition to Djokovic and Nadal, Roger Federer and Dominic Thiem will also be missing from these two highlights, but the Swiss and Austrian competitions at the US Open are also shaky.

Due to the absence of Djokovic, Nadal and Federer, there is a curiosity at the Western & Southern Open: For the first time since 2001, there will be no representative of the "Big Three" at the start this year, rather Daniil will be in Ohio after Toronto Medvedev lead the field. Last year Novak Djokovic trimmed at the Masters event that was relocated to New York City due to COVID-19.
