After the US Open - will fans have to be vaccinated in Europe too?

Spectators who want to attend the US Open must bring a valid vaccination certificate to the events. A model that could also be used in Europe.

Suppose a tennis fan has booked the best tickets for the first evening session at the US Open 2021 for months, probably more than one - and has not yet been vaccinated. Then it says: Unfortunately no admission to the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The USTA announced this in a broadcast on Friday, fairly shortly before the start of the last major of the year. An implementation of the 1G rule.

Unless those affected quickly get a vaccination over the weekend. There are plenty of opportunities to do this in New York City, including very close to the tennis facility in Flushing Meadows: Visitors to the New York Mets baseball games can easily and unbureaucratically get vaccinated directly at Citi Field.

A negative test is also sufficient for the Laver Cup

The Laver Cup, which will be held from September 24th to 28th in the TD Boston Garden, is a little more accommodating: vaccinated or tested - these two Gs have also been known in Europe for months. However, full vaccination protection must be available. Interesting, of course, that the Laver Cup is held indoors, but the US Open is held outdoors in dry weather.

The question that arises with regard to the sporting events taking place in Europe this autumn: How many Gs will it take to sit in the stands as a fan? At the moment the situation in the German Bundesliga is still such that the released capacities of some clubs are not yet fully demanded by the spectators. In Great Britain they seem to be a step further - see as an example the scenes during the top match between Liverpool FC and Chelsea on Saturday yesterday.

What about the Erste Bank Open?

When it comes to tennis, the largest event in the German-speaking region is scheduled for the end of October 2021 in the Wiener Stadthalle. The Erste Bank Open took place last year with a limited number of fans. No vaccine was available at the time. Will the organizers and politicians now lean on the model of the US Open? Or will there also be an opportunity to come into the hall with a negative COVID-19 test?
Early clarity would certainly be in the interests of all those involved. Then there will be no unpleasant surprises like those for the unvaccinated tennis fans in New York.
