Alex de Minaur has taken the top spot among the Australian men on the ATP Tour this past season. This was no longer a matter of course after a good start in the middle of the year.

Alex de Minaur finished the 2019 season in 18th position in the ATP World Ranking. His last three victories of the year have not counted at all: de Minaur dutifully defeated Daniel Elahi Galan of Colombia at the Davis Cup final tournament in Madrid, but then put on a free twice: first against David Goffin, then against Denis Shapovalov. For the Australians was still in the quarterfinals against Canada. The next chance will be at the ATP Cup in Brisbane, where de Minaur leads the home team in the group with Germany, Greece and again Canada.

And although de Minaur, who also contested the final of the # NextGen Masters in Milan this year (and lost to Jannik Sinner), does not like to be the center of attention outside the court. So it was the 20-year-old well-fitting that not he, but Ashleigh Barty was awarded on Monday evening in Australia with the Newcombe Medal, for the second time in a row. De Minaur was nevertheless present at the ceremony - and gave information about his sensitivities.

"It was obviously a crazy year, but I'm very happy with my performance," said de Minaur, who won two 250cc category events in Sydney and Atlanta, opposite the Australian edition of The Guardian . "Especially because it was a difficult year with injuries. And so I am very happy that I am currently in position 18. In tennis you always go through ups and downs, but as soon as I put my thoughts on the track, I was able to play my best tennis. "
