At his second tournament in calendar year 2024, Alexander Zverev also ended in the semifinals. After the German lost to Daniil Medvedev in five sets at the Australian Open, he suffered another narrow defeat at the ATP 250 tournament in Los Cabos. This time the Australian Jordan Thompson proved to be a bit too strong after over 3:30 hours of play.

The hope for the first title of the season was so great after his confident quarter-final victory over Thanasi Kokkinakis at Zverev. Which is why he said meaningfully after the victory over the Australian: "Winning a tournament is always something very special."

But for now Zverev still has to wait for his 22nd title. The 2020 US Open finalist will have his next chance next week at the ATP 500 event in Acapulco. There, where he triumphed in 2021 and a year later made what was probably the biggest mistake of his career .

In 2024, Zverev will lead the field in the Mexican seaside resort, and the competition around Holger Rune, Alex de Minaur, Taylor Fritz, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Casper Ruud is impressive. Nevertheless, the 26-year-old is the top favorite for the title, as he feels as comfortable at hardly any other event as he does in Acapulco. There couldn't be a better place for his first title of the season.
