As the ATP announced on Monday, it will investigate the allegations of domestic violence by Alexander Zverev against his then girlfriend Olya Sharypova as part of the ATP Masters tournament in Shanghai. "The allegations against Alexander Zverev are serious and we have the responsibility to deal with them," said ATP CEO Massimo Calvelli. /

Zverev then spoke up. He suggested investigations by the ATP months ago and now welcomes them accordingly. "As I said before, I clearly and categorically deny any allegations." An injunction was reached against the publishing medium and the journalists on these "false accusations" - but they would ignore it and still not have taken the story offline. Instead, they would refer to it regularly on social media. His lawyers have initiated further steps, Zverev continued.

Zverev: ATP investigation into the incidents in Shanghai

Zverev is referring to the US journalist Ben Rothenberg, who in November 2020, after meeting Sharypova, reported in a detailed story about psychological and physical violence on the part of Zverev , also as part of the Laver Cup in Geneva. In a follow-up story from August this year, Sharypova had made further allegations that had taken place during the Masters tournament in Shanghai in 2019, in the official player hotel - which makes the case relevant to the ATP. Intervention therefore had long been demanded from some quarters. With regard to the Laver Cup, which has also been part of the ATP since 2019, nothing was mentioned, even if the player hotel and an employee of the event were also involved.

"We hope our investigation will enable us to establish the facts and determine appropriate follow-up action," said ATP CEO Calvelli.
