Finale in Ammersfoort 2006: Djokovic beats Massu

The competition at the Dutch Open 2006 was not bad, with Guillermo Coria at least one of the dominant clay court players of the time was in the tableau, the Olympic victories of Nicolas Massu were also just under two years in the past. Nevertheless: The premiere title of Novak Djokovic on the ATP tour at the same tournament only has to be seen as a medium-sized surprise afterwards. After all, the Serb, who now holds 79 tournament successes, started as number three in Ammersfoort.

Djokovic, then 19 years old, had already reached the quarter-finals at the French Open in 2006, beating Fernando Gonzalez, Tommy Haas and his all-time favorite opponent Gael Monfils on the way there.

Djokovic in the final against Massu

In Ammersfoort it started very smoothly for Nole, against compatriot Boris Pashanski he only gave three games in round one. Tomas Zib in the eighth and Marc Giquel in the quarterfinals also had nothing to report, but the top seeded Coris was waiting in the final round. However, the Argentinian gave up at 2: 6 and 0: 1 due to a shoulder injury, so Djokovic was in the final.

There he got to deal with Massu, who also catapulted himself into the final without losing a set, defeating Carlos Moya in the round of eight. Djokovic gave in the first set a 3: 0 lead, was behind in the tie break 0: 3, but finally won against the toothy Chileans 7: 6 (5) and 6: 4.
How much time has passed since then can not only be seen in the pictures of the young Djokovic: The first-time champion received an iPod as a special prize. First generation. Veteran Massu did not have to grieve at least in this regard - he too took a device from Apple.

There is no question that Novak Djokovic has not yet reached the end of his title list. In 2020, the world number one after the ATP Cup also won the Australian Open and the ATP Tour 500 tournament in Dubai. The annual balance of the industry leader in detail: 18: 0.
