Andy Murray is not the only active or recently retired professional on the ATP tour who, in addition to his triumphs on the court, also does good things away from it. In 2022, Murray added a particularly fine touch to his commitment to UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund. Because all the prize money that Murray earned on the ATP tour after Russia invaded Ukraine went straight to UNICEF. All in all, that was 630,000 US dollars. For this, Murray was presented with the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award by the ATP yesterday. For the second time already.
Unlike the other winners of the various ATP awards, Murray didn't just send a video greeting, but took the time to write an essay explaining his motivation for helping out.
Murray affected as a father
"There are 7.5 million children in Ukraine and after nine months of worsening conflict, 5.2 million of them need support," Murray writes on ATP's website. "UNICEF works around the clock to give children security." This includes, for example, the physical protection of children or the provision of medicines or clean water and food.
"When you see pictures of children being affected by things like this on the news, it makes it all the more difficult to digest," Murray continued. “I have four children who are lucky to be doing well. But when you're a parent yourself, it hits you in a different way. You try to put yourself in their shoes. If something like this happened to your own family, how difficult would it be? You don't want to imagine it."
