"Playing the Grand Slam tournaments is a priority for me. The schedule is complicated, but of course I understand why that is," said the 33-year-old on Monday evening. The tournament in the USA starts on August 31st, and the French Open will follow on September 27th. Andy Murray won the US Open in 2012, at least he was in Roland Garros in 2016 in the final - and lost there against Novak Djokovic.
Due to an injury, Murray most recently participated in a Grand Slam tournament at the Australia Open in January 2019. After the Corona forced break, he would "not care what the situation is, provided it is safe," said the Briton. He would also accept empty spectator ranks. When asked about the current events surrounding the Adria Tour by Novak Djokovic, Murray said that the picture was wrong. "When you go through a time like this, it is important that all top athletes worldwide show that they take it extremely seriously."
Murray serves for a good cause
Even under difficult conditions, Murray would be happy to start in New York in August. "If I am told that I can only take one companion, I would probably take a physical trainer with me. Coaching can also be done from a distance," said Murray. However, Murray's current world ranking position could be a little problem: he is in position 129 - and we would have to get a wildcard to actually have a starting place in New York City.
From Tuesday, however, he will first make his comeback on the court at the "Schroders Battle of the Brits". The charity tournament organized by his brother Jamie raises money for the British National Health Service (NHS). It will take place from June 23-28 and is expected to raise at least £ 100,000.
