The former world number one is currently in training, but Berlin does not fit in her preparation for the second half of the year. Kerber has been training with coach Dieter Kindlmann since the end of last year. At the beginning of the year, the left-hander reached the fourth round at the Australian Open, but was beaten by Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova from Russia.

Julia Görges (Bad Oldesloe) and Andrea Petkovic (Darmstadt) will take part in the tournament, and two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova (Czech Republic) also gave her approval. In the men's division, world ranked seventh Alexander Zverev and Germany's long-standing number one Tommy Haas have registered for the invitation matches. Dominic Thiem, number three in the world, and Australian Nick Kyrgios will also play in Berlin.

The matches take place on grass in the Steffi Graf stadium of the Berlin club LTTC Rot-Weiß and on hard court in a hangar at Tempelhof Airport.
