Tatjana Maria has advanced to the second round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid after a hard-fought three-set victory against Peyton Stearns .

Successful fight: Tatjana Maria managed a comeback victory at the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid. The 36-year-old from Bad Saulgau defeated the American Peyton Stearns 6:7 (4), 6:2 and 7:6 (5) in the first round.
Maria was the only German player to qualify directly for the main draw. Three-time Grand Slam winner Angelique Kerber from Kiel decided not to take part in the tournament in preparation for the French Open.

Laura Siegemund (Metzingen) will have to compete in the qualification on Tuesday, which Jule Niemeier (Dortmund) did not survive.
