The three-time Grand Slam winner Angelique Kerber will lead the field at the WTA tournament in Berlin this summer. As tournament director Barbara Rittner announced on Monday at a press conference with a view to the event from June 12th to 20th (ServusTV), she is hoping for "some top ten players" next to the 33-year-old from Kiel.

"We are talking to a lot of people and we know some of them that they want to come," said Rittner. For the 47-year-old national coach, the tournament will take place on a "perfect date" and, after the French Open in Paris, will offer ideal conditions to prepare for Wimbledon (from June 28th). The organizers are cooperating with the British, the courts are modeled on the sacred lawn and the Wimbledon balls are also used.

Due to the pandemic situation, it is still uncertain whether spectators can also come to the LTTC Rot-Weiß eV facility. The organizers are currently hoping for an occupancy rate of between 20 and 50 percent. Last year, the tournament premiere was canceled due to Corona.
