Felix Auger-Aliassime has reached some career highlights in 2022

Felix Auger-Aliassime started the 2022 season as eleventh in the world rankings and, according to status and papers, advanced to the quarter-finals at the first Grand Slam tournament of the year in Australia, where he only failed in five tight sets against the eventual finalist Daniil Medvedev was. Previously, FAA also won the ATP Cup title with the Canadian team.

And because the impressive successes weren't enough, on February 13, the young man from Montreal managed to do what was believed to be almost impossible - namely the first tournament victory on the ATP tour in his ninth final participation. Rotterdam should be the special place. At least one ATP World Tour 500 event if the protégé of Toni Nadal and Frederic Fontang had taken so long.

Spring and summer with clear weaknesses

Although it didn't work out a week later at the 250 in Marseille with the bonus (5:7,-6:7-[4]) final defeat against Andrey Rublev), the North American's button was thought to have finally worked. Then came the US hard court spring and with it a severe phase of weakness for the right-handed player, who played in a variety of ways, which should last until late summer.

If it was at least enough for a round of 16 participation at the French Open, it was over in Wimbledon right at the start. Even at the US Open, Auger-Aliassime was only granted a single match win. So cloudy autumn prospects for the 22-year-old, who mentally might already be in the following season.

2023 can come!

But then, out of the blue, the turning point: At the indoor hard court tournament in Florence, Auger-Aliassime defeated JJ Wolf in the final and left the vicious circle he had been in for practically half a year with his second season and career title. With two more tournament victories (Antwerp and Basel), he was able to close the year 2022 in sixth place in the world rankings and last but not least was able to celebrate the first Davis Cup title of a Canadian team, for which he practically won at the finals in Málaga single-handedly paved the way.

So what's missing for the best rating? Consistent performances throughout the year, as well as courageously successful appearances at all four major events. But one by one. Felix Auger-Aliassime achieved a lot in the past season. The next career bests could follow in 2023, so we wouldn't be surprised.
