And there they were again, the problems of Alexander Zverev, which had tormented the Germans over long stretches of the past year and also at the ATP Cup in early 2020: In his 3: 6 and 4: 6 against the American qualifier Tommy Paul was achieved Zverev made nine double mistakes while his opponent made no mistakes. In contrast, Zverev only had three aces, while Paul, not exactly known as a monster server, got five.

And so the single tournament for the last year's finalists was already over in the round of 16 after a season of 88 minutes. In 2019 Alexander Zverev only failed in the final against Nick Kyrgios. He had to give up on Tuesday (local time) after losing the first set against Ugo Humbert.

Dimitrov and Isner continue

However, Zverev was not the only prominent player who had to say goodbye to the single tableau: Félix Auger-Aliassime , most recently in the final of the tournaments in Rotterdam and Marseille, also lost to Kyle Edmund in two sets. Dusan Lajovic, number eight of the event, went down 6: 7 (2) and 0: 6 against Soonwoo Kwon.

After all, Grigor Dimitrov and John Isner held themselves harmless on the round of 16: The Bulgarian made it extremely exciting against Adrian Mannarino, only prevailed in the tie-break of the third set. Isner, on the other hand, won against Marcos Giron with 6: 3 and 7: 6 (4). Tournament favorite Rafael Nadal played the last match of the evening against Miomir Kecmanovic.
