One thing could always be said about Alexandr Dolgopolov's matches on the ATP tour: there was no lack of entertainment. The Ukrainian was known for all kinds of slice balls. With the forehand, the backhand, short or long, Dolgopolov had everything in his repertoire. In professional tennis, however, the Ukrainian will no longer be seen. Because Dolgopolov had to end his career, an injury to the wrist that he had already suffered in 2018 put the 32-year-old off.

In a training session during the Australian Open, Dolgopolov did not hit a ball properly and felt slight pain afterwards. “I reached the third round at the Australian Open and then traveled back to Europe. But I never thought that would end my career. I tried it for a couple of years, had two operations - and I'm still in pain.

Alexandr Dolgopolov had made it up to position 13 in the ATP world rankings, his best Grand Slam result he achieved with the quarter-finals in Melbourne. He won the last of his three titles on clay in Buenos Aires in 2017.
