Tsonga lost to Belarusian Egor Gerasimov 5: 7 and 1: 6 and is waiting for the second match win of the year. The Frenchman, who slipped to position 71 in the ATP world rankings after several injury breaks, has so far only had a sense of achievement in Marseille. There Tsonga won against Feliciano Lopez. Gerasimov meets Jannik Sinner in the second round.

Kei Nishikori already looked like the sure loser against Guido Pella in the second set: First the Japanese had to create a rebreak with a score of 5: 6 in order to stay in the match. Nishikori did this to zero. In the following tie-break Pella led 3-0, Nishikori managed to equalize the set with 7-4.

In the decision, Nishikori started with a break, Pella could not use three chances to equalize. In the end, Kei Nishikori sat 4: 6, 7: 6 (4) and 6: 2 Cristian Garin is the opponent in round two.

There was a little surprise in doubles: Pablo Carreno Busta, a recognized doubles player, and youngster Carlos Alcaraz defeated the two specialists Wesley Koolhof and Lukasz Kubot in two sets.
